2013 is shaping up to the be the year of eSports. Activision is upping its game with a $1 million prize.
The competition is a culmination of league battles that are going on right now, and takes place on April 5-7th, 2013 in Hollywood, CA. This is a 32 team tournament, with each team having 4 players. The top eight teams in the COD: Black Ops II World League Champions Series (Season 3!) will go on to compete in this live event. As well as the top teams from the MLG Winter Championship of the MLG 2013 Pro Circuit and the ESL’s European Finals.
This tournament is sponsored by Xbox, which pretty much means the only console you can compete on is on the Xbox 360.
It’s interesting to compare a COD tournament to other eSports games like Starcraft II and League of Legends. Those games are built to provide a high level of strategic gameplay depth and are constantly balanced to provide the best tournament play. The best players can to rise to the top and can defend their turf due to their mastery of the game. With COD, you have a game that gets updated each year with all new maps, and mechanics. It pretty much levels the playing field in a way that new players can come in each year and vie for the top spot. For the makers of COD, it can be no easy challenge creating such a balanced game for tournament play year in and year out.
