The Most Played Shooter of 2011

This year saw an onslaught of crumbling buildings, bullets, and blood, in video games, that is. But what video game topped all other shooters in gameplay hours tracked?

WINNER:  Call of Duty:  Modern Warfare 3.

Call of Duty:  Modern Warfare 3 concludes the dramatic story of Task Force 141’s attempt at stopping World War 3. With returning characters Price and Soap ready to take down the man behind the deaths of millions of innocents and beloved comrades, how far will they go to stop a mad man?

In recent years, Call of Duty dominated the playtime charts — this year was no different. The average Modern Warfare 3 player clocked in 20.45 hours in the opening week, 15% and 21% more than Battlefield 3 and Gears of War 3, respectively. Modern Warfare 3 also accumulated 2x more playtime than Battlefield 3 in its opening month.

Gears of War 3, though, earned the average longest time played in one sitting with 2.32 hours.

If the Modern Warfare story isn’t what you’re looking forward to, spend time in the game’s new survival mode or Kill Confirmed game type and join over 50% of players who jumped right into multiplayer, propelling Modern Warfare 3 as this year’s most played shooter.
